Caddo Lake Community Meeting
November 19, 2014

On November 19th, the Caddo Lake Clearinghouse* sponsored a community meeting at the Karnack Community Center. The Clearinghouse was established in 1999 as a forum for communication and collaboration on wetland management at Caddo Lake.  The Clearinghouse holds periodic meetings for the community to find out more about current issues of interest and concern. Over 50 people attended the November 2014 meeting.

Meeting presentations:

Oil Spill in Caddo Parish, Tom Killeen, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Office of Environmental Compliance - As much as 4500 barrels of crude oil spilled from a pipeline of Sunoco Logistics Mid Valley near and into Tete Bayou, just upstream of Caddo Lake in Mooringsport, Louisiana on October 13th. Initial reports indicated some wildlife killed and 4 miles of the bayou affected. There are mixed reports on whether the oil is reaching Caddo Lake. Tom Killeen and representatives of Sunoco provided an update on the spill and helped with a discussion of how local communities can assist with future spills.

New and Existing Invasives at Caddo Lake, Tim Bister, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department - Caddo Lake and other lakes in the area are now threatened by a new invasive plant, crested floating heart.  Tim Bister discussed the treatment program TPWD has begun, how to identify the plant and what people can do to help. 

He also provided his summary of conditions at Caddo Lake for oher invasive species.
