Caddo Lake Institute

Our Mission
Caddo Lake Institute (CLI) is a non-profit scientific and educational organization with the mission of protecting the ecological, cultural and economic integrity of Caddo Lake, its associated wetlands, and surrounding plant and wildlife habitats.

CLI is proud to support the efforts of the local communities, organizations and individuals to protect the unique treasure that is Caddo Lake. This diverse alliance continues to address the issues of invasive species, water quality, and environmental flows to protect the land and waters of Caddo Lake and to support conservation of an area designated under the Ramsar Convention as a "Wetland of International Importance."

Caddo Lake, located in northeast Texas, on the border of Texas and Louisiana, is one of the best examples in the southern United States of a mature baldcypress forest. The area is known for its exceptional wildlife diversity.

Dwight K. Shellman

Caddo Lake Institute mourns the passing of Dwight K. Shellman, Jr. who, with Don Henley, founded CLI.  Dwight passed away in Aspen, Colorado on March 21, 2012. He was the President of the Caddo Lake Institute from 1993 to 2006. Although many people have worked to ensure that Caddo Lake and its associated wetlands are protected for future generations, Dwight’s vision and tenacity were driving forces that overcame all obstacles. His legacy will endure as long as people love and benefit from Caddo Lake.
